Fiji Prisoner has leg amputated by after “resisting arrest”…..

Fiji escapee had leg amputated because of injuries inflicted by soldiers The shameful truth at last – one of the Naboro prisoners has had his leg amputated as touted by bloggers on this forum weeks ago because of injuries inflicted by soldiers during his recapture.

Bloggers said the prisoner was being kept away from public eyes because he’d lost his leg during the messy recapture.

It was also suggested the last prisoner to be caught, Isoa Waqa, had died after being beaten – a report Fiji police rejected as rumours with the threat they would charge those spreading them.

But today the Magistrates Court was told Epeli Qaraniqio has indeed had his right leg amputated for injuries ‘allegedly’ sustained during the recapture and cannot appear in court for another fortnight.

Qaraniqio was to have fronted more than a week ago with the other escapees but did not. Police again today failed to bring him to court with the  Director of Public Prosecutions lawyer, Lisiate Fotofili, telling Magistrate Janaka Bandara it will be two weeks before Qaraniqio can take the stand.

While presenting a medical report, Fotofili told the court the dressing on Qaraniqio’s leg was only removed on Friday.

There has been no official report until now about the prisoner being forced to have his leg  amputated. Fiji media at the time ignored reports of an amputation, following instead the official line the escapees were still ‘under medical treatment.’

Qaraniqio is said to be recovering at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital where he and the other escapees were taken after being beaten by soldiers.

All of the prisoners were kept away from general medical staff and were seen and tended only by RFMF medics.

Fiji has been divided on the violence meted out by RFMF soldiers and police in the recapture of the escapees, after they managed to elude them for some time after their break out.

Many have insisted the escapees deserved being assaulted by soldiers because they’re criminals.

We say today’s official confirmation a prisoner had to have his leg amputated because of injuries sustained at the hands of soldiers is proof the regime and those carrying out its orders cannot be trusted to uphold the law and to protect citizens.

Police quiet on leg amputation of recaptured prisoner
Publish date/time: 23/10/2012 [13:03]

Police said they will not comment on the leg amputation of a recaptured prisoner, Epeli Qaraniqio until they see the medical report.
When asked by Fijivillage, Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said nothing will be said for now as Qaraniqio is still in hospital.
He said investigations into the recapture of the five prisoners late last month is still underway but he cannot say anything further.     DPP lawyer Lisiate Fotofili has confirmed in the Suva Magistrates Court that Epeli Qaraniqio cannot attend court as his right leg has been amputated from an open wound.
Fotofili has asked for a two week adjournment.
The case will be called again before Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili on the 5th of next month.
Qaraniqio is co-charged with Isoa Waqa and Solomoni Qurai in relation to the BSP and Wishbone robberies after the prison breakout.

  1. At least he will no longer be a threat to public in future as he cant run, we have a price to pay for our actions and he gets his.I hope this is a good lesson for would be criminals.Let me remind you….! dont you ever be a criminal or you will face consquences

  2. Anon hahahahaha e mosi……? io vuli mai kina kua ni baci laki vakavurea me dua tale break from prison or another one gets amputated.Boka a kena o ka ya

  3. Big mistake…they should have amputated limbs from all the esapees. So no longer threat to society.

  4. Vinaka.

All prisoners who escape from prisons in Fiji should be given the same treatment.

It will be a lesson for them to learn the hard way?

If we take a referendum in Fiji today, I am sure more than 50 percent will vote for either amputated limbs from all the esapees or legs so that they will never beat up a law abiding citizen of Fiji and rob them.

  5. I am shocked. From reading the comments here, is clear that many people in Fiji are barbarians as evidenced not only by the amputation of the leg of one of the prisoners, but by the people here who approve of such treatment.

It is commonly believed by people in other countries that people in Fiji are friendly. In fact, even foreigners who have lived in Fiji for a few years often have that impression. However, the friendliness is very shallow and deceptive as proven by the approval of amputating limbs of prisoners and other incidents.

After the year 2000 coup, indigenous Fijians marched through Suva, burning and looting, while singing Christian hymns; I saw it on TV. Families were driven from their homes and women were raped. And people have the unmitigated gall to insist that the new constitution define Fiji as a Christian country when it obviously is not.

This latest incident will result in Fiji’s getting the reputation it deserves.

  6. FRE

The barbarian comments come from the minority, members of the military trying to show that the regime has some public support.

Did you see women being raped on TV? Wow thats a new one for me.

  7. Anon,

No, the rapes were not reported on TV. However, they were in the news.

Fiji has a conformist culture. Conforming is fine if it results in kinder and more loving behavior. Unfortunately, conforming is a two-edge sword; it can also result in gang violence and other unacceptable behavior.

  8. Why aren’t the injured prisoners taken to court on stretchers? Presenting them in such a manner would do them no harm. Probably the reason that they are not thus presented is that those responsible for their injuries are attempting to hide their barbaric behavior from the public.

Of course the behavior of the captured criminals was unacceptable, but it is also unacceptable to stoop to their level.

  9. @FRE

People in fiji are so fed up with these indigenous rascals that they dont even care if they are shot dead while recapturing.

Please dont bring your american diplomacy in here, only if you would have experienced such an event.

A few years ago an american citizen, a retired fijian police officer, who was visiting his families in suva (KEWAL’S FAMILY across SJSS) got killed during a home invasion – so much so for these thugs.

  10. @Who cares

People get killed all over the world (including Fiji) daily and breaking the legs of escaped prisoners will never, ever stop the killings, let alone crime.

The filth and venom spewing out of your mind is in fact the cause of killings and crimes, people who cannot evaluate facts from fantasy, right from wrong, and legal from illegal.

I feel sorry for the likes of you.

  11. @ Who,

It is understandable that people would be angry with the escaped prisoners and perhaps even fantasize about slowly lowering them into a vat of boiling sulfuric acid. But even though they may think about doing such a thing, civilized people would never actually do it.

Laws are for everyone to follow. When we flaunt laws (except perhaps those that cannot be followed without violating the principals of social justice), we encourage others to flaunt laws also and thereby create a situation in which lawlessness, which hurts everyone, gradually becomes more common and acceptable.

The courts are set up to examine and present evidence that juries and similar bodies use to determine guilt or innocence. Then, it is for a judge to use that decision and additional information to pass a suitable sentence. When the police and military arrogate to themselves those functions, no one is safe. People lose their trust of the police and military and become afraid to coöperate with them, thereby causing the police and military to lose their effectiveness since their effectiveness depends on public coöperation.

Many people think, perhaps correctly, that the increasing lawlessness and crime in Fiji are at least partly the result of the bad example set by coup leaders and others who have shown disrespect for the law. By condoning the actions of the police and military who intentionally and feloniously caused unnecessary and serious injury to the escaped prisoners, you are encouraging the very lawlessness which you profess to deplore.

  12. this is very good all the prosioners should have theri legs and ball amputated
    bloddy motherfucker fijian bastards

  13. Where do we want our Fiji to be…i would rather have the rule of law and no one above it…even police officers for that case..if criminals are convicted than the punishment is there..for officers …what kind of work do they expect..escorting an old woman across the street…we need to have our proffessionalism up..where everyone can be judged under the law…but maybe lets wait for a new constitution.

  14. When intelligence services (sic) of the West seek to destabilize ‘ANY’ country for not being a decent & proper participant in it’s own ongoing oppression or political control, the real consequences to the overall morality & thus human rights of the ppl of that country are rarely seen until incidents like this.
You could name 100 3rd world countries with similar (Hidden) consequences.
The trouble with ‘ANY’ form of fascism is it only promotes stupid violent people.

  15. @ mosi vei eda,

Do not assume that having a leg amputated below the knee would make running impossible. Remember Oscar Pistorius who killed his wife. He’s had both legs amputated below the knee and he can run very well; he’s actually an Olympic champion.

  16. Undeniably believe that which you stated. Your favorite reason appeared to
be on the internet the easiest thing to be
aware of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider
worries that they just don’t know about. You managed to hit the

without having side-effects , people can take a signal. Will probably be back to get more.
    Thanks
