Insipid Censorship …….. USP management instructed the school of journalism to remove him from the programme.

Noted Fiji academic stopped from speaking the USP students

Posted at 16:56 on 10 May, 2013 UTC

A former University of the South Pacific professor says he was stopped from addressing journalism students on World Press Freedom day last week.

A former economics professor, Wadan Narsey says he was invited to speak to students and had accepted.

He says the invitation was then rescinded, and he was told that USP management instructed the school of journalism to remove him from the programme.

“There were no reasons given, there was nothing even in writing. One day there was a programme on the students’ website, and the next day the(new)  programme was on. The real programme is that the occasion was very important, in the sense that it’s to celebrate world press freedom day and you’ll notice that none of the media in Fiji have reported this incident where the university interfered with a programme.”

Dr Narsey says he was planning to talk about censorship and media ownership in Fiji.

The USP Vice Chancellor has been unavailable for comment.

  1. Gee, if the occasion was very important and it was to celebrate world press freedom day why would anyone want Wadan Narsey as a speaker ?

Someone made an obvious mistake, corrected it and moved on. Get over yourself and concentrate on improving your economics before trying your hand at press freedom.

  2. Spot On Anonymous, with your comment.

    Mistake made and mistake corrected.

Wadan is no academic, just another man with an agenda.

  3. Mr Wardan Naarsey is a courageous and honorable man. Unlike those lamusonas and liumuris on the USP board, shame on them

  4. I’m surprised the USP management still believes in press freedom and think its an event worthwhile commemorating! The world already knows the USP is a mute regarding the undemocratic and unlawful activities of the junta since 2006. How many USP academics have pointed out the abnormalities and illegalities that have happened and are still happening with this rogue regime? How many have tried to point out the non-indepdence of the judiciary or the non-auditing of government accounts or the deteriorated state of public services…etc? NONE!! It surprises me when the USP management likes celebrating world press freedom day when Fiji does not recognise press freedom!! This is hypocracy overdrive. How can an institution that sees no evil, feels no evil and smells no evil, given the way the press operate in Fiji today, pretend world press freedom is important? Problem is that the rogue nature of the regime has over the years turned the more enlightened citizenry rogue too including all these USP monkeys who should be standing up and speaking out against everything that is unlawful, unethical and undemocratic of the regime. With all sincerity the USP management should try another stunt because this one is not convincing!!

  5. He was replaced by Mrs Vodaphone, remember? No contest. Vodaphone is the top layer of freedom of expression in Fiji. You can’t compete with a mobile phone Wadan.
