“We only knew of 3.5 acres, now they want to cut the mangrove to develop the area”

Villagers angry,  PBS says deal is on

The controversy surrounding a proposed land development by Pacific Building Solutions (PBS) at Wailekutu, Lami, has taken a new twist. Yesterday the fishing grounds owners at Waiboloa where the development was earmarked, Tikina (district) ‘o Suva, said they want the project cancelled. Their representation, Navakavu Development Committee (NDC), delivered a letter to the Roko Tui Rewa – Suva, Taniela Tabukarawa, stating they want Government to stop the developers. “We were tricked,” committee spokesman Taniela Vueta said. “We only knew of 3.5 acres, now they want to cut the mangrove to develop the area. “There is something fishy happening. We want to close the deal and do not want it discussed again. “We do not want them to come to us again. “This is the collective agreement of all leaders in our district. We feel we were cheated,” he said. He said copies of the letter would be given to line ministries and the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. Last Friday the Director of Lands, Jope Davetanivalu said a permit was given for 3.5 acres to PBS which excluded the mangroves. On Sunday acting Permanent Secretary Lands Tevita Boseiwaqa said clarification would be made on the size of the land owned by the company. He said no approval had been given for development. But yesterday PBS managing director Michael Fairfax maintained that everything was still in order and that they had obtained all necessary approval from landowners. In email correspondence he said, the proposed development area was 12 acres and included mangrove areas. Mr Fairfax in response to questions on residents concerns said PBS was investigating concerns on possible pollution within the area. According to the company, the new PBS headquarters is a state of the art eco- friendly designed structure that will be the first of its kind in Fiji and the proposed reclamation of the foreshore area approved by the Navakavu Development Committee (traditional iqoliqoli owners) will have a positive environmental impact on the area.

  1. Well done Fiji military morons. You khaiyum puppies have bent over, taken it up the rear, and are allowing scumbags and treasonous thieves to destroy your nation.

  2. Question : Why would a building company want to construct an industrial complex right next to the sea ?

Answer : Because it makes it so much easier and cheaper to dispose of its waste products.

“a state of the art eco-friendly designed structure” until it’s dark and the tides right.

  3. Fiji is totally farked under this junta…..Ms Gobbles…..don’t print that……sharoon….SHAROON….No I don’t know anyone named gaddafi who lives in a drainpipe????

  4. Qoliqoli rights campaign gathers steam

The landowners who are the traditional qoliqoli owners of the foreshore land at Waiboloa, Wailekutu, have written to Bainimarama to demand that the planned project cease immediately. The Bainikhaiyum regime was about to lease the land to a developer who plans to cut down mangroves to develop the land. The Suvavou qoliqoli owners were joined in their protest by other Rewa qoliqoli owners who protested the destruction of mangroves between Fletcher Road and Raiwai. The fact that this report is in the regime’s propaganda rag, the Fiji Sun, means that Bainimarama might be preparing to give into the qoliqoli owners demands, even though he has claimed he always opposed recognition of qoliqoli rights. He even claimed that the Qarase Government’s policy to recognise qoliqoli rights was one of the reasons why he had to seize power.

  5. Kai Rewa
Ulukau,,,,,,,,dont cause trouble. Who then was in the village located in Thurston Gardens before the capital moved from Levuka? You fool.
Anyway, Suvavou is part of Rewa ,,,they are kai Rewa ie Tikina Suva.
Connect mada with yo roots you drifter!

  6. You cant have any development/investment in Fiji, because the lazy, sloth, ineptitude, scumberg landowners are after easy money crying qoliqoli, and a hinderance to progress and prosperity of the nations.

Let the natives eat the mangroves, which they have been doing for donkeys years.

Its high time all native land should revert to state land where development for the progress of the nation is needed.

  7. One sided views.

The Company developing the land is central to this – why you guys blaming Govt?

  8. @JoeBlow…you miss the point here. Its ok to have development but why does it have to be at the expense of someone elses livelihood. There is so much land around, why can’t PBS build somewhere else? PBS is an Australian owned company trying to do in Fiji what they would not be allowed to do in Australia. They think they can trample the locals, bribe govt officials and get on with it. As for eating the mangroves, many actually make a living catching crabs and fish there. Think before you blow. Hot air that is. I am being kind here.

  9. @Joe Blow

Whilst development for the progress of Fiji is very important, it is equally important to have this controlled taking account of future generations.

To pass control of all land use to a goverment whether it is a past, present or future one in no way garantees the best decisions will be made for the future. China in its greed inspired growth for world domination of manufacturing to increase its prosperity has wrecked its land and enviroment due to its goverments total control. Is this what you want for Fiji ?

Great respect should be given to traditional landowners and communities who live on and use the land and sea resources. What is needed is dialouge between parties not simple suggestions like yours.

  10. This is an interesting development. While bai is cunningly trying to appease the indigenous people by seeing to their concerns and needs he is also trying to lure developers in by offering land and sea areas. While development is good it should not be done at the expense of environment and landowners rights and compensation. It would be interesting to see what becomes of the issue when brought to call.

  11. @My Man…we blaming the govt because they have the final say in granting approvals to PBS. PBS, an Oz owned company should try doing this in Arnheim Land in Northern Australia. See how far they get. We have a govt in Fiji which is short sighted and in a nutshell, stupid, greedy and very soon to be short-lived.

  14. @ JOe Blow
who are you to speak about the “progress of the nation”?
have you been elected by the people to do that?
no, you have no legitimate authority to speak on progress for the nation.
you are speaking for some vested interest. what is your special interest?
have you heard of land grabbers in the Brazilian Amazon?
they also bring your kind of attitude to bear on the indegenous people . they don’t have the right to hold back “progress”. some even feel they don’t have the right to live. so they are killed off. joe blow, whoever you are, you are logically committed to such perverse thinking.
But it’s good you brought your tatti thinking here because you now receive some good education from other more educated bloggers.
