Authorities launch murder probe into Fiji death in custody

Peter Lewis,

Fijian authorities are promising there will be a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into this week’s death of a man in police custody.

Tevita Malasebe, 30, was arrested in an early morning police raid on his home over a series of violent robberies.

Within hours he was dead.

His family claim there were signs he had been beaten and a post mortem has confirmed he died of internal injuries.

Assistant Superintendent Ulaiasi Ravula says the matter is being treated as murder.

“We are looking at all those involved in the interview and those who went to bring in the suspect,” he said.

Investigations are continuing into the deaths in custody of two others detained earlier this year by the Fiji’s military.

Great scoop..(Not)!

According to the gist of the story, a dead man-long buried, was killed again. So much for the accuracy of this blog and the source material from  Yahoo Australia, which dates the news as occurring in 2012.

It would not take much of thinking by the Editors of the blog(if they were competent enough), to realize that this alleged ‘breaking’ Fiji news is 5 years old.

One might even think that, perhaps the rush to post breaking bad news in Fiji, that common sense and decency flew out the window.

Do the family of the deceased and Fiji Today readers deserve an apology?

Although, Fiji Today has been a consistent critic of censorship in Fiji news rooms; it is these lapses of judgement that condemns the entire edifice of the 4th estate in Fiji.

Perhaps it was intentional to create a situation where the scheduled decision for PER removal on Jan 7th, is reversed.

The burden has now fallen on Fiji Today to start practicing what it preaches and further take the issue up (with same relentless vigor) with Yahoo 7 Australia to correct their news feed and archiving system.

Absent of such above mentioned actions, leaves the public with no other conclusion, that Fiji Today was a shill to begin with, and continues to be a mouth piece of main stream media conglomerates in Australia/News Zealand.

  1. 5 + 3 = 7.

Be very wary about any association with political movements who include torture & murder within their manifestos. Vore & others are now slowly starting to realise only too well what they have done & the subsequent consequences of these actions. You cannot commit torture & murder in Viti under the guise of Taukei nationalism – that era has long passed. Vinaka.
