Withdrawn NFP candidate blasts amendment

Updated at 9:45 am today

A withdrawn candidate nominee for Fiji’s National Federation Party says this year’s election is being characterised by constantly shifting goalposts for opponents of the regime.

Makareta Waqavonovono has been ruled out of contention for September’s election after a late amendment to the electoral decree ruled that candidates must be living in Fiji for at least 18 months immediately before being nominated.

The former magistrate earlier filed a High Court application seeking clarification on the decree’s provision regarding her eligibility.

But before a ruling was delivered, the Fiji regime gazetted what Ms Waqavonovono calls a “questionable” amendment.

She says she’s disappointed for her supporters.

“But I would ask them to think carefully when they exercise their right to vote in September and vote out this Fiji First party which is trying to pass decrees that ensure there is no free and fair election.”

  1. The rules are there for a reason and this woman did not comply with the requirements, simple.

Should she of had any loyalty to Fiji she would have been here showing the people what she had to offer and giving them a track record to measure her performance.

Just another wannabe seeking five minutes of fame because she has been stupid enough to lose the chance of filling her pockets.

  2. Big mouth kamal no ear is at it again. Biman, throw this man away. Oh no, he is working free as stated in the declaration.

Well if u pay peanuts, you get the cousin of monkey
