Withdrawn NFP candidate blasts amendment

A withdrawn candidate nominee for Fiji’s National Federation Party says this year’s election is being characterised by constantly shifting goalposts for opponents of the regime.
Makareta Waqavonovono has been ruled out of contention for September’s election after a late amendment to the electoral decree ruled that candidates must be living in Fiji for at least 18 months immediately before being nominated.
The former magistrate earlier filed a High Court application seeking clarification on the decree’s provision regarding her eligibility.
But before a ruling was delivered, the Fiji regime gazetted what Ms Waqavonovono calls a “questionable” amendment.
She says she’s disappointed for her supporters.
“But I would ask them to think carefully when they exercise their right to vote in September and vote out this Fiji First party which is trying to pass decrees that ensure there is no free and fair election.”
