POLICE investigations into a video showing the assault of recaptured prisoners which sparked an international outcry are continuing, despite earlier reports to the contrary.

Police Commissioner Ben Groenewald confirmed the brutality video posted online remained under investigation.

He said earlier comments on the matter referred to advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions concerning possible charges against the person responsible for uploading the video.

He said no conclusion had been reached yet regarding the allegations concerning the video.

The video was captured by someone who was at the scene of arrest of prisoners who had been on the run. It showed men who appeared to be members of the security forces beating the prisoners and to some extent sexually degrading one of them.

The commissioner said once the investigation was completed, it would be given to the DPP to decide if charges were to be laid.

Police Chief of Operations, ACP Rusiate Tudravu had earlier said the case was closed and he would not be making any further comment.

  1. Now this screw up shows the unpalatable state of our police force or for the matter the whole law and order system in Fiji

  2. Do I hear the General correctly? He wants to prosecute the person who has uploaded the video? A classic case of shooting the messenger.

  3. The smart as is saying that the closed investigation is in regards to the person who uploaded the video. As if anybody cared about that.

The concern has always been in regards to torture by officers of the law.

  4. Lamusona levu – yes that is unfortunately the norm in Fiji today. A culture of shooting the messenger, ostrasizing the whistle blower and criminalising the truth teller has beset the nation. This mob brought that culture and have institutionalized it in many bodies and agencies of the state! That is why the whole government machinery is corruptly defunct. From the civil service to the judiciary, police and other constitutional offices, they have all been made numb to the evils of this regime. They see no evil, smell no evil and suspect no evil. They have all been programmed to pretend everything is fair, legal transparent and accountable when it is glaringly not!. The new police commisioner is just waking up to this reality as he settles in! He’s frustratingly surprised already with the way the election comissioner and the media works and is already telling his police officers not to get involved with the election which is undoubtedly a national scandal! Knowing the international bearing of the video of the prisoners torturing by the military, he will not want to put that to bed until it is satisfactorily resolved. He has higher personal integrity of himself to protect than the integrity of the idiot who seized power illegally!
