Ex RNZI…… Electoral Roll a Government secret?

Electoral process casting doubt on Fiji elections

Updated at 4:33 am today

The Fiji Labour Party says no one can have any confidence in the National Register of Voters because the government has decided to not make it public.

It says in March this year the regime slipped in a change via Decree 9 that removed the requirement to publish the National Register and a registered voter’s right to object to the names registered in it.

The Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry says they only discovered the change recently.

He says the Register could contain thousands of bogus voters but it won’t be possible to flush them out because the government is not obliged to publish it.

“One can only access his or her own information nobody else’s, it’s now become a secret document, accessible only to the state and of course in this particular case, to the state, maybe to the Fiji First party, to the exclusion of all other political parties and registered voters.”

Mahendra Chaudhry questions how the international community can continue to believe that the September polls will be free, fair and credible.

  1. Chaudhry is an idiot, and should never be allowed to remain in politics.

The guy is so dumb, or considers others are, to not take account that personal information is personal and not for the eyes of every idiot nobody like him.

  2. All the Parties under United Front For Democratic Fiji should apply for a permit to protest against the decision to keep the Register of Voters SECRET…this is unacceptable, especially when there are allegations already making the rounds that passports have been sold to recent Chinese immigrants, in exchange for their promise to vote for Fiji First (recent immigrants are not eligible to vote)…keeping the Register of Voters a secret fuels the rumor mill, which is already on overdrive…transparency should be demanded.

  3. The state needs to keep the register secret. It is almost impossible to rig elections effectively when the register is public.

  4. We have been saying from the very beginning that this election is antional scandal! The rules, the way the election commissioners do their work and the whole style in which the process is stage-managed testifies the scandalous nature of the election. Banimarama and cronies have schemingly crafted this election as means for gaining the legitimacy they have unsuccessfully been trying to secure for years from the international and local community since their illegal takeover! He has even made a constitution for himself and his partners in crime, supposedly ensuring their immunity and given the power to the puppet he appointed as miliatry head step in and takeover government should they be defeated. We are all eagerly waiting to see what will eventually result from this grand scandalous scheme.
