Spending more than we are earning

Trade deficit totals $270m

THE Fiji Bureau of Statistics recorded a trade deficit of $270.9million for March this year compared with $196m in February.

In a statement, government statistician Epeli Waqavonovono said the value of imported goods in March totaled $442.6m while total exports were valued at $171.6m.

“Compared with the previous corresponding month, imports decreased by $87.7m while total exports increased by $18.3m,” he said.

  1. Cushioning these enormous losses and deficits are the moneys coming from Fijians living overseas bringing in the much needed foreign exchange.

    Those living in Fiji should be very thankful for their relatives abroad. If, as it had been reported, we are receiving as much as $350 million per year from our relatives overseas, it would come almost $90 million a month which is a very substantial amount; more than half the total export.
