UNEMPLOYMENT is the single biggest election issue of concern for people in Fiji.
This was revealed in the latest independent Tebbutt Times Poll conducted by Tebbutt Research for The Fiji Times in urban and peri-urban areas of Suva, Nasinu, Lami, Nausori, Nadi, Lautoka and Ba from May 19 to 22, 2014, ahead of the September 17 election.
The poll surveyed 1036 people in total. A majority 55 per cent mentioned unemployment as an issue; 30 per cent described it as “the biggest” issue, ahead of “cost of living”.
The survey also revealed that young people are seriously affected by unemployment, especially males — 41 per cent between 18 and 24 years old, and 39 per cent between 25 and 34 years — who categorised the lack of jobs as “the biggest issue for Fiji”.
The problem of unemployment has also affected people personally with 60 per cent and 59 per cent respectively describing it “as a concern facing people like them right now”.
