“The Media Industry Development Authority (MIDA) is still waiting for freelance journalists to apply for registration.”
“Section 33 subsection 1 of the Media Decree states that every media organisation that provides or intends to provide media services in Fiji must be registered.
” MIDA Director Matai Akoula says those who don’t abide by the provisions of the Decree can be subjected to fines stipulated.
However, he adds it’s not all about penalties but about journalists and the media becoming responsible. Matai says while they await registration, there are other matters that need their urgent attention.
These include setting up the MIDA Secretariat and getting a headquarters up and running at Domain in Suva.
With the formation of the Fijian Media Association only weeks ago, Matai says MIDA is fully behind the organisation. He adds that MIDA is currently working towards conducting an Elections workshop next month.
