We read in the Fiji Times that former high court judge Nazhat Shameem has been appointed Fiji’s permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
The announcement was made yesterday by the permanent secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Amena Yauvoli (FT 9/5).
But who made the appointment?
The appointment was made by the Bainimarama military dictatorship as a reward to her for her role in providing the legal props for the 2006 military coup and the coup regime that was installed and has been ruling by decree for nearly 8 years now.
In the last five years ( in fact it’s been much longer than that) Ms Shameem has not only been engaged in “de-mystifying the law” as she claims, she has been actively involved in circumventing the law.
Her appointment to this high office is a show of appreciation by the coup makers.
It is not the first time a Fiji coup supporter has been appointed to the United nations.
