NEWLY elected People’s Democratic Party leader Felix Anthony says the party recognises the rights of women to social, economic and political equality and opposes gender discrimination.

Mr Anthony said this would form an integral part of their manifesto to be launched next month.

He added that the manifesto would ensure its policies, legislation, budget allocations and internal machinery are consistent with its commitment to gender equality.

“We will adopt temporary special measures to increase the representation of women in parliament and other decision-making bodies including government statutory bodies,” he said.

“The PDP also believes that Fiji’s youth have a right to engage in all areas of social, economic and political life, including decision- making.

“The party will develop policies that promote the education, training, up-skilling, re-skilling and employability of young people, as well as their active participation in civic and political life.”

According to Mr Anthony, the PDP would also develop policies and legislation’s that guaranteed the rights of children to education, safety, health and wellbeing.

“The PDP will improve the enforcement of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Fiji ratified in 1993.

“In keeping with its commitment to human rights, the PDP will develop policies that safeguard the rights of all persons with special needs too.

“The party will ensure that they are protected from discrimination, abuse and neglect and that they are able to enjoy equal rights to employment, housing, education, transportation, a safe environment and access to public areas and buildings.”

  1. My humble advice to Felix is to do first things first. Many of us know that Felix was a part of this illegal regime. Felix played a vital role in the FNPF saga. Felix benefitted a lot from the Natadola project and the regime’s decisions and activities some years ago before he and the regime had their falling out. We also know Felix suffered at the hands of the regime when he tried to champion the rights of Fiji’s workers and the people of Fiji.

Now that is why Felix will tread a fine line and be diplomatic about things. He seems to be doing the right things to right the wrongs of a regime he once a part of. Many will condemn him but I will give him a benefit of the doubt. I do so because we are all humans and we all make mistakes. We all need the chance to make things right.

Felix, here are my requests on behalf of many who have suffered the decisions and actions of Voreqe and his dictatorship:

    1. Please admit the wrongs you have done. Make a public confession about your involvements with this regime.
    2. Make a public apology for your role at Natadola and the resulting negative impact on FNPF and on us the workers of Fiji and the members of FNPF.

Please think carefully about what I have said above and kindly do the following publicly in the papers, TV and also on this blogsites. Many of us still want to trust you. Many have lost their trust in you. This is your chance to restore our trust in you my brother. I hope you will do the right thing. Vinaka.
