Political provisions are creating an obstacle in successfully concluding an Economic Partnership Agreement with the EU. This was the message from Trade Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum as PACP Trade and Fisheries Ministers begin a two day meeting in Suva. Sayed-Khaiyum says some crucial decisions need to be made, such as possibly suspending negotiations until the EU elections. He says while the EPA is simply a trade agreement, but political provisions within the EPA are getting in the way.“These provisions within the EPA are skewered in favour of the EU who are the judge, jury, and executioner if you like in determining whether there is a violation of the political provisions and have the freedom to invoke illegal trade sanctions in response.” Papua New Guinea’s decision to sign the EPA in 2009 was also mentioned this morning. PNG is an observer at the meeting in Suva. –

  1. Incredible! This blog looks just like my old one! It’s on a
entirely different topic but it has pretty much the same layout and design. Outstanding choice of colors!
