Vote-buying claims

LABOUR leader Mahendra Chaudhry says vote-buying techniques have not worked in the past and would not work this time around as well.

Mr Chaudhry claims that Minister for Women Dr Jiko Luveni’s distribution of sewing machines in the Lau Group recently was a vote-buying effort.

“Dr Luveni was distributing sewing machines in the Lau Group two weeks ago and in the North a couple of months back. Several homes are now being donated to families who lost their homes in floods last year,” he claimed.

Mr Chaudhry said civil servants were also holding roadshows in the North to advise on rural housing, initiate self-help projects, provide water and engage in poverty alleviation activities.

“These are all vote-buying efforts using public officials and funds,” he claimed.

In response, Dr Luveni said Mr Chaudhry’s comments were nothing new.

“I have been doing this for so many years.

“My goodness, it’s unbelievable,” she said.

Dr Luveni said she was honoured to be selected by the Prime Minister for his proposed association.

“I still have a lot of work to do that I would really like to finish for women and underprivileged in Fiji.”

She said if given the opportunity to be in government for a few years, she would be able to complete her ministry’s program for Fijians and for those receiving social services.

  1. Papa Pig has been vote buying using public fund for a long time. The very thing he accused the Qarase government on, which prompted the unprecedented political campaign by the military.

  2. Ratu any govt of the day will do that because its all about delivery and this kind of delivery has been there since 2000.anyways whatever you want to say wont change the fact that Franks policies is the best

The plaintiff rests and the voters will now take over.

  4. if past governments /old politicians were doing that – vote-buying – it was wrong.
but if the present government of Frank Bainimarama and a new politician like Dr Jiko Luveni is doing it then it is right.
    that is mackeral’s perverse logic.

  5. Anon anyone in that position would do service to the people, you need to come out from your high horse and thinking negative

  6. The point remains that he is doing the same thing he accused others for and labelled it as corruption. To the extent that while still a public servant (Commander) he indulged himself in political campaigning, misusing budgetary allocation for the exercise. And that was against the government of the day.

Now however he not only abuses his power by virtually squandering public fund for his vote buying exercise but sacks people who criticise his government of his policies.

    Hypocrisy of the highest order.

  7. That is vote buying. You can deny it Minister but the people will deny you come election time.

  8. People normally take advantage of free bus rides just for the sake of enjoyment particularly small kids. After all Bai has the brain of a kid and attitude of a thug,

  9. Mahen Choro falla. He was buying vote by giving $28k to indian cane farmers.

Maybe, he forgot just like he forgot about the exchange control act.
