Fiji trade unions will flout electoral decree

Updated at 11:48 am today

The Fiji Trade Union Congress says it is going to intentionally flout a new decree by the regime placing restrictions on political parties.

The Decree says the nomination of an independent candidate is not valid unless it is accompanied by 1,000 registered voter signatures, containing their addresses, occupations and voter numbers.

Penalties for breach include a fine of 27,000 US dollars or five years in jail.

The co-ordinator of the UFDF, Mick Beddoes, has filed a police complaint against Rear Admiral Frank Bainimarama for breaching the decree himself.

The president of the Trade Unions Congress, Daniel Urai, says if Rear Admiral Bainimarama can flout his own decree, the unions can too.

“The trade unions will flout this decree. We treat it as a joke. We have to fight the injustice. You cannot fight injustice by abiding with laws or decrees, whatever they put out. We’ll have to fight them.”

  1. Reading this I’m totally confused as to what the unions are are intending to flout.

  2. The Rear Admirable can flaunt ANY law because he is the Dictator of Fiji. He is above the law and the trade unions are under his thug rule. No the trade unions can’t flaunt any decrees made by the dictator. The decrees were made for them, not for the dictator.
    Understand the difference?
only through a peoples’ power uprising can the dictator be made to bow before the law

  3. Go ahead Dan you will make it easier for the regime. PDP no doubt will not get much votes. No seats in my view.

  4. When will the people of Fiji raise against the regime.
Dan and Felix are the only two who can take the regime to task with their connections to trade unions overseas.
Come on Dan and Felix this the time to do some thing.
People of Fiji are helpless with the regime.

  5. In his letter to the Fiji Times 5/4 Pita Dovibua calls on” the government of the day to take up the offer by the United Front for a Democratic Fiji of a live televised debate…”
He then goes on to say if they take up the offer “I will vote for the proposed Fiji First Party” [the party of the government of the day].
Shouldn’t he listen to the debate first before deciding who to vote for?
I mean isn’t that the rational man’s and woman’s way of deciding which way to vote?
It’s strange that Pita should call for a public debate when his vote will not be guided by it.

  6. Now we are getting somewhere – civil disobedience – not only unions but the public as a whole should refuse to obey these unjust laws and decrees and the kangaroo courts that prop them up. In fact this is how the free world came to be, people collectively stood up against the tyranny of employers, colonialism, nazism, apartheid, the Berlin Wall and other forms of oppression by trashing the unjust laws of its perpetrators and their institutions. When you are in shackles you have to fight for your freedom and the principles you value & cherish; and if you should die fighting for your freedom then this will be of the highest honour.
