The developers have reneged on promises during the exploratory stage and landowners don’t trust them any more

Stand-off between landowners and Fiji mine developer

Landowners from a district in Fiji near Suva where a gold and copper mine is planned say their relationship with the company behind the venture has gone from bad to worse.

The Namosi Joint Venture is a partnership between the Australian mining company Newcrest and Japanese interests and has been held up at various stages due to environmental concerns.

A landowner, who wishes to remain unnamed, says they don’t know whether the Environment Impact Assessment has been completed yet, and says it’s hard to get any information from the developers.

“Our relationship is not too good at the moment, lots of miscommunication is happening. We told them to listen to landowners, they did not want to listen. We won’t give Namosi to be mined, no.”

The man says the developers have reneged on promises during the exploratory stage and landowners don’t trust them any more.

  1. Just remember even if an Environmental Impact Assessment is produced, it does not mean that what the report says and recommend are fully scientific neutral and honest. The tendency is for most reports to be biased towards the company/ organisation paying the assessor.

The landowners must engage an independent and appropriately qualified expert to assess the report for them.

There is a USP based Environmental expert doing the rounds of consultancy in Fiji whom I crossed path with regarding a work he was commissioned to do….he had to hire a NZ based expert to return to Fiji to answer questions…even the NZ based expert was very flimsy and did not adequately answer questions at the public meeting. THESE ARE THE EXPERTS WHO COME TO Fiji TO FULL US LOCALS..

gOOD ON YOU nAMOSI PEOPLE….DIG YOUR TOES IN , lEARN FROM THE DEBACLE IN THE bua mine. Fijians are being shafted in every way by this Govt to give up their future, rights on their land, traditions and culture,,,,,,MORE REASONS NOT TO VOTE BAINIMARAMA and his Party.
