WOMEN will only be recruited in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces when the need arises.

That’s the word from Prime Minister and army commander Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

“It’s on a need basis,” Commodore Bainimarama said in an interview yesterday.

“Gauna qo sa rauta vinaka tu na allocation ni mataivalu (At the moment I am happy with the current allocation of the RFMF).”

“Na gauna sa na vinakati kina me so tale na yalewa, ira na qai recruit taki (When there is a need to have more women in the force, we will recruit them).”

Asked if this meant that only men were being recruited into the force, Commodore Bainimarama responded, “donu (correct)”.

At the moment, there are 92 female women in the force of which nine are officers and the rest are in the warrant officers, senior non-commission and junior offices non-commission ranks.

Last year Cabinet approved two recruitment drives to enlist 900 reserves. The recruitments were held in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa.

However, no women were enlisted.

In his 2014 Budget announcement, Commodore Bainimarama said the government allocated $94.2million to the RFMF and an additional $39.9m to fulfil peacekeeping responsibilities.

He said a large portion of the $39.9m was allocated for peacekeeping responsibilities and would be reimbursed by the UN.

He also said Fiji’s commitment to UN peacekeeping remained unwavering.

“It is a source of great pride that for a nation of our size, we are able to make a meaningful and significant contribution to the international community.

“For the last three decades, we have always responded to the call of the UN to serve in some of the most difficult circumstances around the world, including Lebanon, Iraq, the Sinai Peninsula, and now, the Golan Heights, a disputed territory between Israel and Syria.”

  1. Likely then that as a campaigning politician (har har har) his policy views on equality should be interesting for female voters (who are almost half of the voting public), to get a handle on.

  2. The RFMF under VB’s leadership is notorious for the sexual abuse of female army personnel both locally and during missions abroad. Without tackling the root causes of the problem it is obvious that VB is taking the easy solution by excluding the female gender from joining the RFMF to prevent such problems from happening. Senior male officers involved in sexual affairs with junior female officers in the past are still being employed by the illegal regime. So where is the equal opportunity, gender equality, etc that the illegal regime has been promoting to the people of Fiji all these years?

  3. given the bleatings about how enlightend this regime claims to be, it clearly has 20 century view of a womans place. So no indians or woman of any consequqnce or number in the army eh boys. That’s the spirit, do as we say not as we do. Despite the prevalence of beatings and violence against women in fiji you can only presume the regime just want to ‘protect them from harms way’ or a stray bullet now ? how noble!

  4. Apparently thugs in the army can abuse, rape and or just get them pregnant ,but don’t want them nagging on the front line.

  5. Thank god we are not sending woman for peace keeping in the middle east, otherwise half of them will come back home pregnant.

Now those championing the woman, how many of you are prepared to look after their kids……

  6. @Saivusi

Go and suck Tim Qitawa’s balls. If my wife was a soldier and wants to go for peacekeeping so be it. Tossers like you are just full of shit.

  7. BBPP
    Bainimarama Bullshit “Peoples Party”
Bainimarama’s party will always be Bainimarama’s Military Thug Party.
