SIMA Tawake of Burenitu, Ra, used to cook food and sell them by the roadside in the hope of earning a few extra dollars.
She and 58 others in her village will now be able to sew clothes and earn an income.
Burenitu was one of 19 villages in the interior of Ra that received sewing machines from the Minister for Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni.
Ms Tawake, 24, said she was very grateful for the assistance.
“It will be a big help for us and all the other women in the villages,” she said.
“We are thankful to government for this assistance.”
Dr Luveni presented the 37 machines at Matawailevu Village in Ra on Friday.
Dr Luveni also visited Nailuva Village and distributed eight sewing machines.
“We have 600 sewing machines coming in from China and another 300 from India. We also have 80 machines left in our office for distribution and we will hand these out before elections.”
