Fiji police prevent unionist from flying to China labour conference

Posted at 01:56 on 25 September, 2012 UTC

The president of the Fiji Trades Union Congress says police this morning stopped him from boarding an international flight to attend a world labour conference in Beijing.

Daniel Urai’s court case over charges laid almost a year ago of urging political violence was adjourned in May and since then he has had to apply for a permit to leave Fiji.

Mr Urai says despite a court order allowing him to make the trip to China, police took him into custody after he had cleared immigration, saying they had received an order from Suva to stop him from going.

“I asked them what, was I arrested and they said no, we’re just trying to clear you, then they said, you can fly. They said I can now go and fly after the plane was taxiing off the tarmac.”

Daniel Urai says he is hoping to be able to board this afternoon’s flight and will be seeking compensation from the police for his original ticket on his return from China.

  1. The modus operandi of dictatorships who a law onto themselves.

It does a lot in boosting confidence in an already tarnished reputation of a useless police force.

  2. China is no threat to Bainimarama so why is he scared of Urai going to China, after all bai is hiding all the kickbacks in China.

  3. State sanctioned thuggery and intimidation. This is the new Fiji hailed by the facist fools supporting this illegal dictatorship. There is no rule of law as it should be applied. The judiciary is just an arm of the thug junta. Khaiyum, Gates and Pryde have a lot to answer for in their key roles in the corruption of the rule of law under this human rights abusing regime they are part off.

  4. Dan Urai, like all other trade unionists in Fiji, spend half their time on junkets, overseas trips at the expense of poor union members.

What benefit will his attending the union meetings in China and Malaysia will bring to the ordinary members of the union?

How will it assist the union members to provide the daily needs of their families in Fiji today?

All unionists shuld be barred from attending overseas junkets, trips which will bring no benefit to their union members except filling their pockets via un rates of per diem etc.

  5. @ Joshua

“All unionists shuld be barred from attending overseas junkets”

With that kind of nonsense you would make a good mouthpiece for the dictatorship -maybe you should apply for a higher position at the barracks there?

  6. @radioracists

Tell me how this meeting which will be attended by Daniel Urai in China and malaysia will benefit the ordinary union members feed their families, you moron.

By the way thanks for idolising our hero, Voreqe Bainimarama.

  7. Just straight forward harrassment. A tactic by regime to frustrate regime opponents and scare others who might even think about opposing the regime. The regime is beginning to lose the plot and are fumbling over everything they do.

  8. @ Joshua Qio

“Tell me how this meeting which will be attended by Daniel Urai in China and malaysia will benefit the ordinary union members feed their families, you moron.”

If you have no idea as to WHY unions were formed and what function they play in being a voice for employees, go read a book. This is not a classroom for helping you sort out reality from fiction.

  9. what, no media release form the laughable PS of Mis-Information?? Perhaps this is another ‘unfortunate circumstance’ worthy of investigation?? Is what you get when you cross the military regime? of course it is…so nothing has really changed has it….
