The European Union today signed an agreement with SPC for a total funding of 63.7M.

This funding is aimed to help Fijian farmers diversify their income from cane and will help them seize new opportunities.

European Commission director Dirk Meganck says EU’s bilateral assistance to Fiji was suspended in December 2006.

“While we are hopeful that the conditions will be fulfilled to resume full cooperation, we continue to care about the social situation of the vulnerable populations and particularly those in the rural areas directly dependent on the sugar production. We are therefore mobilising funding for social mitigation programmes implemented by non-governmental and international organisations.”

He says this has led Fiji to lose important allocations that could have contributed to reform the sugar industry.

Megnanck says they have still continued assistance in some ways.

  1. What part of ‘the junta is not getting any subsidies and support from the EU or anyone else’ does this junta dimwit bhaini-the-goose not understand?

  2. The dumb dictator has done sucessful REFORMS in fiji.

Look at fiji the land of REFORMS????????

    Nothing is moving nothing.

Fiji has been DEFORMED by junta crooks.

The people must save fiji from this junta crooks.

    Fiji is doomed.

Dictator must be held accountable for sugar industry and FSC DEFORM and DOOM.

  3. If we look at the amount of money that previous governments have poured into the sugar industries and the sugar cane farmers, in proportion to the amount of money that has been spent on farmers that farm other crops, then I think that a disproportionatenamountnof the country’s resources has been and is being spent on cane. Perhaps one our academics could carry out a study to determine this.

The country is now going to have to pay for the EXIM Bank loan from India. History will tell us that the involvement of Dr. JJBhagat and the Sugar Technology Missions started during the Labour Party’s term as government, and Chaudhary came back in the interim government and overturned all the steps taken by the then Chairman of the FSC, Charley Walker to remove JJBhagat’s involvement with the purchase of the parts for the mills.

The directors of the FSC then and now should be examined and taken to task to find out what happened and the results of any investigation must be publicised so that going forward, Fijijans will know that holding positions demands a certain level of care and accountability.

  4. The very successful DEFOMER of sugar industry is in china to collect da corruppt bribes deposit in secret accounts.

    all must be revealed.

  5. Frankie and his lot were counting on the money to be channeled through the government to the farmers so they can their greedy paws on the millions. But hard luck because the EU has seen through their flimsy disguise.

  6. sugar industry is dead bec of this idiot frank/vaniqi.
why dont you two go and plant sugar cane and prove the fijian public.
we see how many tons of sugar vaniqi/frank farm will produce..
fiji indian framers should move out of fiji than we see what happens?

  7. stop using the farmers funds to pay your army groons and crook abdul khan chairmen fsc.
khan f con man from christ church.

  8. Investigation has began on how Sangam Village in Otahuhu,Auckland-NZ got burnt down. Patrons please keep reading for more hot revelation on this story.

  9. With the imminent death of the sugar cane industry, I believe its time for farmers with the help of the EU to diversify into growing sugar-beet as an alternative.

Its a lot more profitable and far easy to maintain.

  10. Without the $300m or so EU grant for sugar industry assistance sugar has been on a free fall and it will be matter of time the ground meets the falling mass. But I must give EU credit for being caring enough to fork out $63.7m to give a helping hand to what is now a hopeless situation. Indeed by allocating the funds for diversification of crops spells doom for sugar. It is therefore imperative that elections be held so that aid can resume and life saving funds be made available. We are dealing with a civil and principled organisation which has sets of ethical guidelines unlike rouge countries like China and Russia which support Fiji regime and back the murderous Assad of Syria.

  11. eu should sent some funding and guns to freedom fighters in fiji.
we can see how fmf will react .
they will run in the cassava patch with its bosses
    sotia solisona

  12. Interesting! So the EU uses a dysfunctional regional organization led by an incompetent director general to shoot holes into its own sanctions required by the Cotonou agreement. The European taxpayers should revolt. How can the EU undermine their own agreements?
