Fiji coup leader to contest election

Fiji’s military leader Voreqe Bainimarama confirmed for the first time Friday that he will stand in elections scheduled for the Pacific island nation next year.

Bainimarama, who seized power in a 2006 coup, said he believed he would win the poll, which will be held under a new constitution drafted by his military regime.

“I will stand for elections,” Bainimarama told reporters in Suva.

“I am confident that I will win, if not I won’t be standing. I will have to form a party but I have not decided on who will stand with me.”

Bainimarama has previously been coy about his intentions in the elections, the first since he ousted the then prime minister Laisenia Qarase in 2006.

He tore up Fiji’s constitution after the coup and assumed the title of prime minister, ruling by decree and introducing curbs on freedom of speech and assembly, as well as muzzling local media.

In January he ditched a draft constitution prepared by an independent academic panel and ordered his government to prepare a new one.

The original draft, never officially released, was believed to have called for the military, a key player in the four coups the Pacific nation has endured since 1987, to stay out of politics after the 2014 elections.

A month later the government issued a decree imposing restrictions on political parties and 14 of the 17 opposition parties were deregistered.

While Bainimarama has pledged to hold elections in September next year, a similar vow to hold a poll in 2009 was never honoured, resulting in Fiji being suspended from the Commonwealth and the Pacific Islands Forum.

  1. Is the illegal PM thinking of forming a Political party?????

His own decree clearly stipulated the dateline for Party registration had come and gone so he has missed the closing date…or will he break his own decreen…….as we always expect.

Of course the public will have no right to take him to court to challenge this in court if he registers a new party after expiry date,,,,while he is giving a hard time to the Parties who attemped to work within the confines of VB’s decrees.

Or he might join a registered Party….maybe the NFP as many people had been speculating.

This scum is so predictable….he is an idiot and people always rightly predicted what he was up to.

Everything he has been doing have lead to what everybody had been speculating ……all he had been doing and saying including hid costly but expensive rural tours and comments on wide spread support in rural areas have been for the sole purpose of campaigning for election….this is corruption.

To all sitizens of this country let us all agree to give VB a good belting with defeat.

Vote for your old Parties and tell VB that you support him but vote for somebody else.

  2. Bring it on VB…….it will be a miracle if the election is not rig. Guess what, surprise, surprise,….say bye bye to your friends, & get ready for the abyss…..

  3. Despot will form political party and contest elections to win.

AJ post reserved to appoint outside parliament cos now vote for hand puppet.

    Who will vote for Despot?

come and test the people power and be ready for a sulu high sprint in cassava patch

so PM to be commander of FMF will save despot thinking- what a joke-can run cant hide form law and naboro awaiting final destiny

  4. You have my vote commondore Voreqe Bainimarama,

and you will have all the votes of indigenous fijians whose life your government has touched/improved.

No right thinking i taukei will kick his own stomach by voting for the die hard racists fijian parties which will reinstate the corrupt chiefly system and then will move on to further reinstate the OLD LEASE SHARING FORUMLA.

This will mean “mate ni kaiviti” so there is really not much choice then to fully support our saviour, a hero of the poor and people’s most popular choice Prime Minister our KING, Commondore Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama.

You will win- hands down Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama.

  5. “I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by my promise to the nation and the people of Fiji that I will hold general elections under a more democratic process, than ever before by 2014 - Hon.VOREQE BAINIMARAMA says:

“I will not impose a constitution on the people of Fiji, but I am bound to listen to the people of our beautiful Fiji Islands and make changes to the constitution, as desired by the people and for the people of our beautiful Fiji Islands – Hon Voreqe Bainimarama

  6. Indeed. And a mini census is being rolled out real soon so as to ensure that the illegal & treasonous regime can effectively execute a spot of gerrymandering.

  7. If the people of Fiji dont agree to the proposed constitution then I have already drafted another constitution and this is a sample of what you will get.

NEW PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION OF FIJI…

‘We the sensible people of the Fiji Islands in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid future coups sponsored by magaitinamu chiefs, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great- great-grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional, and other liberal bed-wetters.

We hold these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim they require a Bill of NON-Rights.

ARTICLE I: You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.

ARTICLE II: You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone — not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc.; but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be.

ARTICLE III: You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful; do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.

ARTICLE IV: You do not have the right to free food and housing. Fijians are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes.

ARTICLE V: You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we’re just not interested in public health care.

ARTICLE VI: You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don’t be surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair, sniff the gas chamber, swing from the gallows, or take it in the vein!!

ARTICLE VII: You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens , don’t be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won’t have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.

ARTICLE VIII: You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful. (AMEN!)

ARTICLE IX: You do not have the right to happiness. Being a fijian means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

ARTICLE X: This is an English speaking country. We don’t care where you are from, English is our language. Learn it or go back to wherever you came from! (Lastly….)

ARTICLE XI: You do not have the right to ch ange our country’s history or heritage. This country was founded on the belief in one true God. And yet, you are given the freedom to believe in any religion, any faith, or no faith at all; with no fear of persecution. The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is part of our heritage and history, and if you are uncomfortable with it, TOUGH!

If you agree, share this with a friend. No, you don’t have to, and nothing tragic will befall you if you don’t. I just think it’s about time common sense is allowed to flourish. Sensible people of the Fiji Islands speak out

  8. how is he going to form his own party when registration has ended. this man is a despot and a maniac and the biggest liar. quite a trait for a leader. the pacific idi amin dada…

  9. I will form MY party. Have a nice time at my place, they sometimes call me, Kranky Textyhands.

  10. elections? there will be no elections people. stop deluding yourselves. you fall for his bull everytime kranky opens his mouth. He will not form any political party or run for elections because there will be NO ELECTIONS.
he promised the pacific forum leaders after he lied about the 2009 elections that there will be no elections in fiji until he gets rid of corruption even if it takes 25 years. he was laughed at by the leaders more senior and experienced than him but kranky was serious.
thats why there is more corruption now than before so that it will take forever to get rid of corruption and there is his perfect excuse for not holding elections.
ELECTIONS AFTER I GET RID OF CORRUPTION IN FIJI – thats his promise. kranky is more righteous than the Pope. God help Fiji.

  11. Now what is the problem? As we speak, Khaiyum is drafting the Exemption Decree. This decree exempts all new parties established by the PM from the rules that had been imposed on other parties. The only provision that will apply to the PM’s party is the need for 5000 signatures. The Exemption Decree also stipulates that signatures of RFMF personnel are acceptable.

  12. Well frankly…if you live to see election day 2014, it might be an eyeopener for you when you’ll lose your deposit…maybe its time to start contemplating issuing a decree to improve conditions at the maximum naboro to prepare for you and your thieving treasonous henchmen….interesting days ahead for you my man!!

  13. So where is his words he said that he was not interested in the pm job and that no military will benefit from the 2006 coup.

  14. While waiting for help, the homeowner may call their insurance provider to inform them of the
problem and inquire if it’s part of the coverage. If you find that the area immediately around your house is very damp, you can add a gravel and limestone border, which will help with drainage. One popular bathroom fixture today that many interior decorators and home owners use is a shower bath.
