Former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase, who is currently serving a one year sentence in prison, is expected to appeal his conviction in relation to the Fijian Holdings Limited case this Wednesday.

The case will be called at 9.30am before Fiji Court of Appeal judge Justice Suresh Chandra.

Qarase’s lawyer Tupou Draunidalo confirmed that the appeal is against conviction.

Qarase was sentenced for 12 months by High Court judge Justice Priyantha Fernando in July after he was found guilty of six counts of abuse of office and three counts of discharging his duty with respect to property in which he had a private interest.

Hon PM Mandela Qarase. We respect your dignity and courage. Unlike the cowardly dictator bainimarama you have never committed treason and do not have the blood of fellow Fijians on your hands. Justice will eventually be done to those who have committed treason against the nation and know what is coming.

Meanwhile, Draunidalo has told Fijivillage that she has written and called the Officer-in-Charge at Korovou Prison, requesting that 71-year-old Qarase be transferred to an infirmary due to his age and health condition.

According to medical records earlier presented in court, Qarase is a diabetic, a heart patient and suffers from hypertension. Draunidalo said she has not received a reply.

She visited Qarase last Saturday and Draunidalo said Qarase is treated like a normal prisoner despite his age and health condition. We have called Commissioner of Prisons and Corrections Services Colonel Ifereimi Vasu however he is yet to respond.

A 48-year-old truck driver of Nausori who fired gun shots at two people who entered his house with the intention to rob his family is still living in fear. Speaking to FijiLive, Sheik Tabish Ali who originally hails from Seaqaqa said he acted in self defence and is fearing retaliation from the pair who he claims were on the verge of robbing his family at their residence in Lobau Feeder Road, Nausori. “We have been staying here for about a year now and this was the third time the robbers were trying to attack to us and to be honest I had no intention of using my gun but I had no other choice as I had to protect myself and my wife.” “The first time they robbed us, they took with them a total of $7k worth of valuables from our house and the second time they were not able to do anything the family was awake and alert.” “This time they broke into our house and were armed with my engineering tools. While they were slowly opening the door of my bedroom, I got my gun out of the drawer together with a knife. I gave the knife to my wife and opened the door quickly with a gun in my hand,” Ali added. “The two men who were of iTaukei origin had steel rods and other equipments in their hands but the moment they saw a gun in my hand, they feared for their lives and ran out at full speed dropping everything they had in their hands.” As Ali chased the two robbers out of the house, he claims to have shot twice, once in the open air and the other on the ground. “I have a valid license for the gun as I often used it for pigeon hunting ever since I was in Labasa,” Ali said. He also added that he would not regret if he is charged by the legal authorities because he was just fed up with the daily occurrence of robberies. The incident occurred at around 1.30am on Sunday. Meanwhile, Fiji Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro has confirmed the gun is in police custody. “Investigations are still underway and no charges in regards to this case has been laid yet,” Naisoro added. my own interpretation:

the only thing frank is there because of the gun. and all lamusona cant do anything. a good example is the story above, the itaukei robbers , is not the first time they come for a break in, the second time they saw Ali with the gun , they run for there life.

A type of insulin that is used by majority of the diabetic patients in the country has been out of stock for about a month now in most pharmacies around the country.

Fijivillage has spoken to major pharmacies who said they only have certain types of insulin while some do not have any insulin at all.

They said that they are awaiting supply from the Government Pharmacy.

We contacted the Government Pharmacy who said that the mix tart 7030 insulin is out of stock.

They said that supply is expected to normalize by next Monday as they are awaiting the new stock from overseas.

When contacted by Fijivillage, Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma said the insulin is being distributed.

Dr Sharma said there has been internal migration of people and increasing cases of NCDs and they need to rationalize the supply.

However, some patients are calling for understanding as they are in desperate need of insulin and in one case, a diabetic could not find any insulin in Suva, Nausori and Lautoka over the weekend.

His family members said the consequences could have been fatal as the sugar level was very high.

  12. FLP questions overseas voters right? permalink

Fiji Labour Party questions the regime’s motive behind the surreptitious removal of the minimum residential qualification for registration as a voter.
The Electoral (Registration of Voters) Decree No. 54 simply states that a person who has reached the age of 18 years and is a citizen of Fiji has the right to be registered as a voter.

This is a marked departure from provisions in the 1997 Constitution and previous Electoral Acts. Section 55 (1) (c) of the Constitution states clearly that a person applying for registration as a voter must “have been resident in Fiji for 2 years immediately before their application for registration (unless their absence from Fiji … is for a reason prescribed by Parliament…”

The exception is in the case of persons who are abroad in the service of the State, for study, on medical grounds or on a temporary holiday. The reasons are specified in the 1998 Electoral Act .

“Why has the 2-year residential qualification been dropped? asked FLP Leader Mahendra Chaudhry.

“The right to vote must originate from a person’s residency and citizenship of a country,” Mr Chaudhry said.

He said the removal of residency qualifications will have serious repercussions for our elections. It can potentially undermine the credibility and integrity of our electoral rolls.

No reasons have been advanced by the regime and we are not aware of any other country in our region that does not have a minimal residential qualification to register as a voter.

We see this as an act of manipulation designed to corrupt the electoral process. The FLP has from the very beginning maintained that it should be kept independent of the regime.

The Constitution Commission has also asserted that the electoral and constitutional process be kept independent of the regime to give it due credibility, independence and integrity

Come clean Mr Ex Minister for Finance
    September 17, 2012

The FLP website has fired some hard questions at the Bainimarama regime and one of them is of particular interest. ” Why are Cabinet salaries now processed by a Suva private accounting firm owned by a close relative of the interim Attorney General and not the Treasury as has been the practice under past governments? ” As he was the Minister for Finance at the time, Mahendra Chaudhry would be in a position to confirm that this was the practice. It would help his case if he could tell us what his salary as Minister for Finance was, which he would know, plus what the total paid for all Ministerial salaries was. This would tell us whether there was any double dipping. MPC would also know whether he was receiving a salary as Minister for Sugar on top of his Minister for Finance salary. Is this why he hasn’t some clean with all he knows about this, when throwing us this one tiny morsel to confirm that Ministerial salaries were paid via Nur Bano Ali’s office?

The right to vote if you are a Fiji citizen without any conditions is the regime’s plan to rig the election – hope that all those who have become citizens overnight by buying their passports for £3000 plus – like Graham Davis, Robin Nair, Satendra Nandan etc etc etc can vote for dictator’s new party in 2014 – cant you get – I wonder if FLP statements are also reproduced in Fiji papers and on radio and Tv – for its in the Fiji media where these types of questions should be raised for few people in Fiji read FLP website
