Ten Fijian soldiers kidnapped by Bedouin tribesmen in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula have been released.

Egyptian security sources say the kidnappers had been demanding that the Egyptian authorities free fellow tribesmen from prison.

The Fijian soldiers are part of the United Nations Multinational Force and Observers.

The remote Sinai region has descended further into lawlessness since a popular uprising ousted Egypt’s president more than a year ago.

The MFO mission was set up as part of the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel which returned the Sinai to Egyptian control.

It was unclear precisely how long the peacekeepers had been held, however, and why the tribesmen had released them.

The MFO could not be immediately reached for comment, while state TV and the state news agency MENA denied that the incident had taken place.

MENA cited its own security source as saying that the troops had in fact got lost but had later found their way home without any problems.

AGI) Cairo – Flash kidnapping in Sinai, where a group of Egyptian Bedouins kidnapped 10 Fiji Islands Blue Berets only to release them soon after. The Blue Berets are members of the Un Multinational Force and Observer mission operating in Sinai, to which Italy also takes part patrolling the coasts of the region. In exchange of the release of the Blue Berets, the Bedouins asked for the liberation of their family members detained in the Egyptian prisons, according to security sources in Cairo .

The abductors reportedly demanded the authorities release from prison several fellow tribesmen, some of whom had been convicted of terrorism.

They freed the Fijians after receiving assurances that their demands would be met, one tribesman told the AFP.

UPDATE

Stories out of Egypt now say the Fijian Peacekeepers got lost and wandered into an area controlled by Bedouin tribesmen. They were briefly detained by the Bedouin at a roadblock but were released when the government refused to trade prisoners for them.

  1. The Egypt-Gaza/Israel border is no longer a cake-walk gig since the overthrow of Mubarak last year.

Egypt has decreased its military presence on that border to focus more on internal security. Bedouin & Al Qaeda runners now regularly try to smuggle goods/weapons into Gaza through and around the MFO lines, with all the dangers that implies in terms of smuggler enforcement & possible Israeli retaliation.

What was once a prime “carrot” for Frank to hang in front of the troops, is now starting to turn into something of a mill-stone instead.

  2. The pussies were kidnapped fully armed. They are only good parading around the streets of Suva in full combat gear. What a joke.

  3. They must have been looking for some cassava to run and hide in – taking some valuable tips from their brave and resourceful, commander-cassava-patch-runner…

  4. The world has seen and heard it all now. What a stain and a blight on what was once a proud institution and its once sterling peacekeeping record.

I sincerely hope that in light of these appalling revelations the UN is reconsidering their acceptance of the 8 new thugs who both excel in and/or are party to the art of humiliation, intimidation and torture of innocent and unarmed civilians.

  5. Fully armed soldiers are supposed to fight; not meekly surrender to some lawless bandits looking for hostages.

When you see these guys marching in Suva with full combat gear one is excused if one thinks that they epitomize the courage of Fijian soldiers of bygone days.

But alas they are only a bunch of pussies who thrive in intimidating unarmed civilians and mostly women.

  6. MFO zone is millitary area. No armed third parties allowed in the area. No third parties permitted to set up any sort of checkpoint in the area.

Yet armed Bediouns driving civilian 4WD’s enter Fiji zone of operations, set up checkpoint inside Fiji zone of operations and detain fully armed Fiji “soldiers” travelling in two M11114 APC’s at gunpoint.

Describing these RFMF “soldiers” as Pussies would be an understatement.
