Fiji has rejected an offer from Australia and New Zealand to help fund voter registration for the proposed 2014 election.
In January, Fiji’s Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, wrote to Australia and New Zealand officially requesting help for the funding of voter registration in Fiji.
The contract for the work has gone to a Canadian company.
After discussions, Australia and New Zealand agreed to contribute $900,000 dollars each and the funding package was offered.
However both countries have now been told by Mr Sayed-Khaiyum their assistance has not been accepted.

  1. The only condition imposed by Australia and New Zealand was that they would pay the company directly and receive reports directly from the company on how their money was spent. Perfectly fair considering the lack of transparency from the dictator and the lack of Auditor General’s reports.

They were going to have no say in the process or how it was overseen.

What is Khaiyum so worried Australia and New Zealand would find out with even a minimum of direct contact with the Canadian company?

  2. @ Guy

I think we can all guess why they have their paranoia with transparency.

My bet is that once we ask for UN Monitors for the election that Frank and Aiyaz will kick up a big stink about it and try to avoid that too.

They will want to do all they can to control the outcome.

  3. Good, only confirms my views about this regime and their misplaced arrogance. As an Australian taxpayer, i am just fine with this. Give them nothing and let the chinese pick up the bill for all i care. What we know is they won’t be taking it out of the military budget, we can be certain of that.

  4. AG is afraid that once Australia & NZ offer is agreed upon…they will have control on the accounability of voter registration.

Secondly…if Aust & NZ are allowed to that…then they will say but must be under the lawful 1997 constitution.

So they are afraid of the trickling down outcome that will make them look silly and stupid.
