New Zealand is giving the Fiji Red Cross $350,000 for its flood relief effort.
Foreign Minister Murray McCully says the situation in Fiji is still being assessed and further assistance could be considered.
“Sadly, six lives have been confirmed as lost and over 1500 people have been evacuated because of floods and bad weather affecting most parts of the country,” he said on Thursday.
“The western division, including Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki have been worst hit by flooding and many areas have been left with no power or water.”
Mr McCully says the money will be used for the distribution of essential relief items and New Zealand is co-ordinating its aid with Australia and France.
Those who see this donation as a generous gesture of the NZ government are mistaken! It is the right of our government to receive gifts and grants from the international community. What matters here is the pathetic amount of $ 350,000. We expect a lot more from this McCully dude who constantly criticizes our government.
And it is indeed distasteful to criticize the military and the government for doing nothing!
I just hope my tax dollars don’t end up in the hands of rogues.
Why should any country help out in Fiji ? The stupid unelected government will put a spin on it that they did this and that ! The Fijians will believe it because that’s all the information they are getting.
China will only help out if they get something out of it ? Just like Japan with whaling
Actually, giving the money to Red Cross may not be the best form of aid. Red Cross gives out nothing but blankets. Most immediate need of the people is food, clothing, beddings etc.
If you check out the Red Cross’s ratio of giving against their outragous administrative costs (salaries) you’d be like many others & give them nothing.

what short memories this regime must have…especially when it comes to handouts. Where are all the new friends with benefits?? Perhaps they might look at taking some cash from the bloated military budget that doesn’t seems to have anyone auditing it.

ok I confess I made up all that about Mark. I feel pathetic about it and it was pretty low and mean spirited of me to make up things. I know nothing about mark except what is gleaned from his blog about his background, etc.
But i just wanted to point out how easy it is for us to simply believe half truths becos some writer out there makes up things then posts it. I apologise to Mark if there was any offense caused. I read your blogs with interest each day and its full of gritty stuff. I only wish you would offer a more balanced view by publishing all submissions. its your prerogative i guess as blog owner.
So the point is don’t believe everything you read.
On the point of Fiji getting aid from NZ, I guess it would have been a lot higher if relationships were better. Lets see if so called friends like China, India and France will step up too.
